10 Things You Need to Know Before Visiting Miramare Castle

Miramare Castle was honestly one of my favorite places I visited during my time in Trieste. There’s something so special about walking through the gardens, seeing the castle right by the sea and looking out over the beautiful blue Adriatic. I could have stayed there for hours just enjoying the view.

But there are definitely a few things I wish I had known before my visit. So if you’re planning to see Miramare Castle yourself, I’m sharing 10 little tips from my own experience that will hopefully make your visit even easier and more enjoyable.

1. Check the Parking Situation Before You Go

Before you head to Miramare Castle, I definitely recommend checking how you want to get there. There is a paid parking area close to the castle, but especially during weekends and the summer months it can fill up quite quickly. If you’re already staying in Trieste, it can actually be much easier to leave your car in the city and take the bus instead. It saves you the stress of looking for a parking space, and the ride is quick and easy. It’s one of those little things that makes your visit much more relaxed.

2. Don’t Miss the Terrace Around the Castle

Before you leave, make sure you also walk all the way around the castle. This was probably my favorite part of the entire visit. The terrace surrounding the castle offers breathtaking views over the Adriatic Sea, and it’s where I took some of my favorite photos of the day. But honestly, my favorite memory wasn’t even taking pictures. I remember standing there for a while, looking out over the turquoise water and simply enjoying the view. It was one of those moments that made me slow down and appreciate where I was. If you’re visiting Miramare Castle, don’t skip this part. In my opinion, it’s the most beautiful viewpoint in the entire area.

3. Give Yourself More Than One Hour

When I planned my visit, I thought I would probably spend about an hour there. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Between exploring the castle, walking through the gardens, enjoying the sea views and stopping every few minutes to take photos, I ended up staying much longer than I expected. I’d recommend setting aside at least two or three hours. It’s one of those places that deserves to be enjoyed slowly instead of rushing from one photo spot to the next.

4. Bring an Insulated Water Bottle

If you’re visiting during spring or summer, don’t forget to bring water. One insulated stainless steel water bottle I really like keeps my water cold for hours, even on very warm days. Honestly, having ice-cold water after walking through the gardens feels amazing. It’s one of those little travel essentials that I now take on every trip.

5. Wear Comfortable Shoes

I know it’s tempting to wear your cutest outfit and your nicest shoes because Miramare Castle is such a beautiful place for photos. But if I can give you one piece of advice, it’s this: wear comfortable shoes. You’ll probably spend much longer walking around than you expect, and there are plenty of paths through the gardens. Personally, I’d avoid high heels and choose comfortable sneakers or sandals instead. Your feet will definitely thank you later.

6. Don’t Forget Sunscreen

If you’re as pale as I am and burn easily, please don’t skip sunscreen. The Italian sun can be much stronger than it feels, especially when you’re walking around for a couple of hours. In my opinion, there’s nothing worse than getting sunburned during the first days of your holiday. A good sunscreen is definitely something worth packing.

7. Use a Phone Lanyard

One travel accessory I honestly can’t imagine traveling without anymore is my phone lanyard. I love having my phone within easy reach instead of digging through my bag every few minutes. It’s especially useful when you’re constantly stopping to take photos like I do. Since it works with almost any phone case, it’s one of my favorite travel essentials.

8. Don’t Skip the Gardens

The gardens were honestly one of my favorite parts of Miramare Castle. They’re peaceful, beautifully maintained and full of little paths leading to incredible viewpoints over the Adriatic Sea. One thing I loved was that it never felt rushed. There are so many quiet corners where you can simply slow down and enjoy the scenery.

9. Bring a Power Bank

If you’re anything like me, you’ll end up taking far more photos than you planned. Every corner of Miramare Castle feels like a postcard. Between the gardens, the sea views and the castle itself, I constantly found another beautiful photo spot. The last thing you want is your phone running out of battery just when you’ve found your favorite view. One thing I personally recommend is a compact power bank with a built-in charging cable. I love that I don’t have to carry an extra cable around, and it fits easily into even a small bag. If you prefer wireless charging, magnetic power banks are another great option because they’re incredibly convenient while you’re walking around.

10. Don’t Skip the Inside of the Castle

As beautiful as Miramare Castle is from the outside, I would definitely recommend going inside as well. The rooms are beautifully preserved and tell the fascinating story of Archduke Maximilian and the history of the castle. Walking through the different rooms helped me appreciate the castle even more, and it made the whole experience feel much more complete. If you’re already making the trip, don’t just admire the castle from the outside—the interior is absolutely worth seeing.
