I used to think that a good summer had to be exciting.
I thought I had to go to summer parties, spend every sunny day at the lake with friends, wear the cutest bikinis, and always have something planned. It felt like that was what the perfect summer was supposed to look like.
But the older I get, the more I realize that the things I truly enjoy are completely different.
These days, all I really want is peace.

A slow morning with nowhere to be. A calm mind. A life that doesn’t feel rushed all the time.
I’ve learned that slowing down isn’t boring—it actually allows me to enjoy life so much more.
For the first time in a long time, I don’t feel like I have to make every single summer day “special.” I don’t need a packed calendar or exciting plans to feel happy. Some of my favorite days are the ones that look the simplest from the outside.
Maybe the best summer isn’t the busiest one.
Maybe it’s the one where you finally slow down enough to enjoy it.
If you’ve been craving a softer, slower summer too, I hope these little ideas inspire you to enjoy the season a little more mindfully.

1. Create Slow Mornings
This has honestly been one of the biggest changes in my life.
For the longest time, the first thing I did every morning was reach for my phone. Before I had even gotten out of bed, I had already been on Instagram or TikTok, watching other people’s lives before I had even started living my own.
Without even realizing it, I started comparing myself. Social media usually only shows the highlights of someone’s life, but first thing in the morning, it’s so easy to forget that.
That’s why I decided to change my mornings.
Now I wake up, make myself some fresh juice, open the windows, stretch for a few minutes, and enjoy the fresh morning air. Then I make myself breakfast, put on some calm music, and spend a few quiet minutes writing in my journal. Sometimes I write down my thoughts, sometimes a motivational quote, or simply how I want to feel that day.
By the time I finally check my phone, my day has already started with my own thoughts instead of everyone else’s.
I’ve noticed that when I start my morning like this, the rest of my day feels calmer too. It’s such a small habit, but it has made a bigger difference than I ever expected.

2. Go for an Evening Walk
This is probably my favorite thing to do during summer.
I’m lucky to live in an area surrounded by forests, which makes evening walks even more special. The air is still warm but no longer too hot, and everything feels so much calmer than it did just a few hours earlier.
My favorite time to go is during golden hour, when the sun slowly starts setting and everything is covered in the most beautiful golden light.
I don’t even listen to music or podcasts anymore. Instead, I listen to the birds singing, the wind moving through the trees, and the sound of my own footsteps. For me, these walks are a form of meditation. They help me slow down and leave all the stress of the day behind.
Life can be busy, which is why I try to enjoy moments like these as often as I can. Because if we’re being honest… warm summer evenings don’t last forever.

3. Spend an Hour in a Bookstore or Library
This is one of my favorite ways to slow down.
There is something so peaceful about walking through a bookstore or library with no rush and nowhere else to be. I love taking my time, reading the back covers, and sitting down to read the first few pages before deciding which book to take home.
I’ve learned that a beautiful cover doesn’t always mean it’s the right book for me. Sometimes the story sounds perfect, but the writing style just doesn’t feel right. That’s why I always like to read a few pages first.
For that hour, I completely forget about my phone, my to-do list, and everything else. I’m simply there, surrounded by stories waiting to be discovered.
And once I’ve finally found the perfect book, there’s only one thing left to do: take it outside.

4. Read Outside
Once I’ve found the perfect book, I can’t wait to take it outside.
During summer, you’ll often find me sitting under a tree, in the garden, or somewhere in nature where it’s quiet and peaceful. There’s something so special about reading while listening to birds singing, feeling a warm summer breeze, and completely forgetting about the world around you.
If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be this: read outside at least once this summer. Leave your phone in your bag, find a quiet spot, and let yourself get completely lost in a good book. Trust me, it’s one of the simplest ways to slow down.
Some of my favorite memories are connected to books I’ve read during summer. Even years later, I can still remember exactly where I was sitting, what the air smelled like, and how I felt while reading those pages.
To me, that’s what summer is really about. Not constantly rushing from one thing to the next, but slowing down enough to truly enjoy the moment you’re in.

5. Watch the Sunrise at Least Once
I know everyone talks about sunsets, but I honestly think sunrises are even more magical.
There is something almost surreal about watching the world slowly wake up while everything is still quiet. The streets are empty, the air feels fresh, and for a little while, it almost feels like the whole world belongs only to you.
Whenever I watch the sunrise, I naturally start thinking about everything I’m grateful for. It reminds me that every day is a fresh start and that I don’t have to carry yesterday with me forever.
Every single time I do it, I ask myself why I don’t make time for it more often. There are no notifications, no to-do lists, and no pressure to be anywhere. Just a quiet moment to breathe and enjoy the beginning of a brand-new day.
Not every beautiful moment happens in the evening. Some of the most magical ones happen while the rest of the world is still asleep.

6. Spend Time with People Who Feel Like Home
I think we’ve all experienced this.
There are people we spend time with who somehow leave us feeling completely exhausted afterwards. Even if nothing bad happened, we come home feeling emotionally drained and just want some time to ourselves.
But then there are the people who make life feel lighter.
The ones you can laugh with, sit in comfortable silence with, or have the deepest conversations with without ever feeling like you have to pretend to be someone you’re not.
The older I get, the more careful I’ve become about who I spend my time with. I’d rather have one meaningful afternoon with someone who truly feels like home than a whole week filled with plans that leave me feeling exhausted.
I’ve learned that the right people don’t take your energy—they give you energy.
So this summer, spend time with the people who make you smile, who genuinely celebrate your happiness, and who make you feel completely yourself.
Life feels so much lighter when you’re surrounded by people who simply feel good for your soul.

7. Visit a Farmers’ Market
One of my favorite little summer rituals is visiting a local farmers’ market.
There is something so special about buying fresh fruit, vegetables, or flowers directly from the people who grew them. You can tell how much love and care has gone into everything they sell, and it always feels good to support local businesses.
I love taking my time, walking from one stand to another, and looking at all the colorful fruit, fresh vegetables, and beautiful flowers. Everything feels a little slower there, and for a little while, it feels like the world isn’t in such a hurry.
If there’s one thing I almost always bring home, it’s a fresh bouquet of flowers.
For some reason, we often think flowers are something we should only buy for someone else. But why not buy them for yourself? You deserve to do little things that make you happy, too.
Every time I walk past them, they make me smile and instantly make my home feel more alive.
Maybe this is your sign to buy yourself flowers the next time you see some that make you smile. 🤍

8. Start a Summer Journal
Keeping a summer journal has become one of my favorite summer traditions.
A few weeks ago, I bought myself a simple notebook in soft pastel colors, and since then I’ve been filling it with little moments I never want to forget.
Some days I write an entire page. Other days it’s just a few sentences. Sometimes I decorate the pages with colorful pens, little drawings, or even pressed flowers I collected on a walk.
I usually make myself a cup of coffee, put on some soft classical music, and simply enjoy having a quiet moment all to myself.
I don’t write because I have to.
I write because it helps me slow down and notice the little moments that might otherwise slip by.
One day, years from now, I’ll open this little notebook again, read through its pages, and remember exactly how this summer felt.
And honestly, I can’t think of a more beautiful souvenir than that.

9. Pack a Picnic
One of my favorite summer activities is packing a picnic and spending a few hours outside.
I usually bring everything that makes me feel good: a cozy blanket, plenty of water to stay hydrated on hot summer days, sunscreen, some fresh fruit, a delicious lunch, and of course a good book.
Whether you go with your best friend, your partner, your family—or completely on your own—it doesn’t really matter. What matters is giving yourself a few hours to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Personally, I think one of the most beautiful things we can learn is how to enjoy our own company. When you can spend time alone and genuinely enjoy it, you stop depending on other people to create happy moments for you.
Sometimes I read a few chapters of my book. Other times I simply lie on the blanket, listen to the birds, watch the clouds, and enjoy the peaceful feeling of being surrounded by nature.
Maybe this is exactly what you need right now.
Sometimes happiness is nothing more than good food, fresh air, and a quiet summer afternoon.

10. Do Something You’ve Been Wanting to Do for a Long Time
I think we all have that one thing we’ve been wanting to do for months… maybe even years.
It could be visiting a little café you’ve always walked past, trying a new hobby, baking something you’ve never made before, or finally reading that book that’s been sitting on your shelf for far too long.
But somehow, we always tell ourselves, “I’ll do it another day.”
One thing I’ve been learning is that life rarely slows down on its own. Sometimes we have to decide that today is the day.
You don’t have to make a huge change or completely reinvent your life. Sometimes all it takes is saying yes to one small thing you’ve been putting off.
You never know what new hobby, favorite place, or beautiful memory is waiting for you until you finally give it a chance.
Maybe this summer becomes unforgettable simply because you finally decided to begin. 🤍

11. Make Time for Yourself
One of the most important things I’ve learned is to listen to myself more often.
Whenever I have some free time, I try to ask myself one simple question:
“What would actually make me happy today?”
Maybe it’s going out for a coffee. Maybe it’s reading a good book, going for a walk, or simply staying home and enjoying the quiet.
There isn’t a right or wrong answer.
The older I get, the more I realize that making time for myself is one of the greatest forms of self-care.
If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t forget to be there for yourself, too.

12. Slow Down—Even During Everyday Tasks
This might be the biggest lesson I’ve learned.
For the longest time, I rushed through everything. Doing the dishes, folding laundry, or cleaning the kitchen—I always wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible.
But over time, I realized something. I can meditate, read books, and go for long walks as much as I want, but if I’m constantly stressing myself while doing everyday tasks, I’m still putting my nervous system under pressure.
Now I do things differently. I open the windows, put on some calm music, make myself a coffee, and simply take my time.
I’d much rather spend ten extra minutes cleaning than rush through it and feel stressed the whole time.
I’ve learned that slow living isn’t just something we practice during the beautiful moments—it’s something we can choose, even while doing the ordinary ones.

Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this article, it’s this:
A beautiful summer doesn’t have to be busy, exciting, or picture-perfect.
Some of the most beautiful memories are made during slow mornings, peaceful evening walks, quiet afternoons with a good book, and all the little moments that no one else gets to see.
I’ve slowly learned that life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
So this summer, don’t worry about doing more.
Slow down. Be present. Enjoy the little things.
I hope this summer brings you lots of golden moments you’ll always remember.
