One of my favorite things in life is traveling.
Watching the sunset by the sea. Wandering through little streets you’ve never seen before. Drinking a coffee while listening to a language that isn’t your own.
Over the past few years, I’ve been lucky enough to visit some beautiful places across Europe. Every trip gave me beautiful memories—but it also taught me something new. Looking back, there are quite a few things I wish someone had told me sooner.
That’s exactly why I wrote this article.
I hope these tips help you avoid a few common travel mistakes, so you can spend less time stressing and more time simply enjoying your vacation.
And one little tip…
Stay until the very end, because the last one is the most important travel lesson I’ve learned so far.

1. Waiting For The “Perfect” Time To Travel
Looking back, I wish someone had told me this sooner.
For the longest time, I kept waiting. Waiting until everyone had time. Waiting for the perfect moment. Waiting until everything finally felt “right.”
But honestly… sometimes you just have to book the trip.
Traveling on my own is still on my bucket list. I haven’t done it yet, but I love the idea of exploring a new place at my own pace and simply doing whatever feels right that day.
To me, that’s what true freedom feels like.
Trust me on this one…
Don’t let other people’s schedules stop you from seeing the places you’ve always dreamed of seeing. Life is simply too short to keep waiting for the “perfect” moment.

2. Packing Way Too Many Clothes
I used to pack my suitcase as if I was moving abroad.
I wanted an outfit for every possible occasion… and somehow ended up wearing the same five outfits the entire trip.
Looking back, I honestly have no idea why I packed so much.
Now I always ask myself one simple question:
“Will I actually wear this?”
If the answer isn’t an immediate yes, it stays at home.
Traveling with a lighter suitcase simply makes everything easier.
One thing that has completely changed the way I pack is using packing cubes. They keep everything organized, save so much space, and make it incredibly easy to find what I’m looking for without turning my suitcase upside down.
→ My go-to packing cubes for stress-free travel.

3. Forgetting To Check My Passport
Trust me… this only takes one minute.
Before every trip abroad, the first thing I do is check my passport.
Getting a new one isn’t always quick, so I’d much rather spend one minute checking it now than spend the week before my vacation stressing about it.
It’s such a small thing, but it can save you a lot of unnecessary stress later.
I also always keep my passport, boarding pass, and travel documents together in a travel organizer. It makes airport days so much less stressful because everything is in one place.
4. Traveling Without Travel Insurance
Hopefully, you’ll never need it.
But if something unexpected happens, you’ll be so glad you have it.
To me, travel insurance isn’t about worrying that something will go wrong. It’s about feeling relaxed, knowing you’re prepared just in case.
Sometimes, the best thing you can pack isn’t something you can fit into your suitcase. It’s peace of mind.

5. Choosing Cute Shoes Instead Of Comfortable Ones
I know… those sandals are adorable.
And yes, those heels would probably look amazing in your vacation photos.
But after walking 20,000 steps through a beautiful city, your feet honestly won’t care how cute your shoes looked.
I always pack comfortable sneakers for exploring and save my prettier shoes for dinner or an evening walk.
Trust me on this one… your feet will thank you.
And don’t forget blister plasters. They’ve saved me more than once.
6. Forgetting A Small First Aid Kit
One thing I never travel without anymore is a small first aid kit.
It doesn’t take up much space, but it can make such a big difference when you need it.
I always pack painkillers, blister plasters, bandages, and any medication I might need—just in case.
Hopefully, you’ll never need any of it.
But if you do, you’ll be so glad you packed it
I keep everything together in a small travel first aid kit, so I never have to search through my suitcase when I need something.
→ I never travel without a first aid kit.

7. Arriving Without Cash
I actually learned this lesson the hard way.
After landing, I needed a taxi and suddenly realized I didn’t have any cash with me. It wasn’t a disaster, but it definitely made things more stressful than they needed to be.
Since then, I always make sure to carry a little cash with me—just in case.
Trust me… it’s one of those small things that can save you a lot of unnecessary stress.
I also use a small travel wallet to keep my cash, cards, and travel documents organized while exploring a new city.

8. Planning Every Minute
Don’t get me wrong—I love researching places before I travel.
But I’ve also learned that some of the best memories happen when you leave a little room for spontaneity.
Some of my favorite cafés, beaches, and little streets were never on my itinerary. I simply found them by wandering around and seeing where the day took me.
Sometimes, the best travel memories are the ones you never planned.

9. Forgetting A Reusable Water Bottle
Picture this…
It’s 35°C, the sun is shining, and you’ve been walking through beautiful little streets for hours.
All you want is a refreshing sip of cold water.
You open your bottle…
…and it’s warm.
Not exactly what you were hoping for.
That’s exactly why an insulated water bottle has become one of my favorite travel essentials. It keeps my water cold for hours, even on the hottest summer days.
It might seem like such a small thing, but trust me… little comforts like this can make your vacation so much more enjoyable.
I honestly use mine on every single trip, and I wouldn’t want to travel without it anymore.
→ My go-to insulated water bottle.

10. Booking Accommodation Without Reading Reviews
Trust me on this one… beautiful photos don’t always tell the whole story.
Before I book a hotel or apartment, I always spend a few extra minutes reading recent reviews.
Looking back, I’d much rather spend five minutes doing a little research than spend my vacation wishing I had booked somewhere else.
Sometimes, those few extra minutes can make all the difference

11. Learning A Few Words In The Local Language
You definitely don’t have to speak the language fluently. But learning just a few simple words can completely change your travel experience.
Whenever I’m in Italy, I always try to speak a little Italian. Walking into a restaurant and saying,
“Buonasera! Avete un tavolo per due?”
always makes me smile.

The waiters almost always smile back, and you can tell they genuinely appreciate the effort—even if my Italian isn’t perfect.
To me, that’s one of the most beautiful parts of traveling.
You don’t have to speak the language perfectly. Simply showing that you’re interested in the country’s culture means more than you might think.
If I’m visiting a country for the first time, I sometimes bring a small travel phrase book or save a few useful phrases on my phone before the trip.
→ Here are my favorite travel phrase books:
🇫🇷 French
🇪🇸 Spanish

12. Being Afraid To Try Local Food
I used to order meals I already knew because it felt like the safe option.
But looking back, some of my favorite meals happened because I simply pointed at something on the menu and decided to give it a try.
Trust me… sometimes the best travel memories begin with trying something new.
You never know…
Your new favorite dish might be waiting for you.

13. Forgetting A Power Bank
One of my absolute travel essentials is a power bank.
There’s nothing more frustrating than finding the perfect photo spot… and realizing your phone battery is at 2%.
I use my phone all day while traveling—for Google Maps, taking photos, looking up restaurants, and checking train times. And honestly, it also makes me feel much safer. If I ever need directions, call someone, or find my way back to the hotel, I know my phone will still be charged.
Trust me… it’s one of those little things you’ll never regret packing.
I never leave for a trip without a reliable power bank in my bag anymore. It’s one of the travel essentials I use the most.
14. Trying To Save Money On Everything
Saving money is something I always try to do.
But over the years, I’ve also learned that there are a few things worth spending a little extra on. A hotel in a better location. Comfortable shoes. Or a direct flight instead of spending hours waiting at the airport.
Looking back, I’ve never regretted spending a little more on comfort.
But I have regretted choosing the cheapest option a few times.
The same goes for travel essentials. Here are a few extra travel essentials that always make my trips easier:
→ My go-to travel pillow for long flights
→ My favorite leak-proof travel soap box
→ The mini fan I always pack for hot summer vacations

15. Spending More Time On Your Phone Than Enjoying The Moment
If I could give you only one travel tip, it would be this one.
Take the photos. Film the sunset. Capture the memories.
But then… put your phone away.
Look around. Listen to the waves. Watch the sunset without thinking about Instagram. Walk through tiny streets without checking your phone every few minutes.
Life already moves so fast. Traveling is one of the few moments where we can truly slow down.
Years from now, you probably won’t remember how many photos you posted. You’ll remember how that place made you feel.
Travel isn’t about seeing the most. It’s about feeling the most.

A Golden Thought
Looking back, I’ve realized that the best vacations were never the most expensive ones.
They were the ones where I slowed down. Watching the sunset without checking my phone. Drinking coffee in a tiny café. Wandering through quiet streets with no destination.
Those are the moments I still remember years later.

So don’t focus on making your trip perfect.
Focus on making it meaningful.
Because at the end of the day, the memories you create will always be worth so much more than the things you pack.
Keep collecting moments you’ll never want to forget.
